Summer Movies I want to See

Summer Movies – Will the summer wind down with awesome movies?

With the summer only having a little more than two months left in 2011, will we have a blowout movie season here in North America or will the summer movies sizzle out? With cool and awesome blockbusters like Green Lantern and Transformers: Dark of the Moon leading the way I think a few more will make this one of the best summers yet.

Summer movies have always led the way to the fourth quarter where holiday and movies the studios think can win awards, but I really enjoy the summer movies. Sometimes I just want to jump into an action flick and watch explosions and big fight scenes with buttered popcorn and a soda. I definitely appreciate the movies that make you think, but I earn that appreciation by enjoying the movies that present the flashy visuals and larger than life action. I take a movie for what it is and what it tries to portray. As Freud said it, “sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.”

With that said, the following are the summer movies I’m dying to see. Not all of them are blockbusters.

Summer Movies - Captain America: The-First-AvengerCaptain America: The First Avenger

Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America. As Captain America, Rogers joins forces with Bucky Barnes and Peggy Carter to wage war on the evil HYDRA organization, led by the villainous Red Skull.

At first sight, I wasn’t a fan. It looked too cheesy à la Fantastic Four for me. But as I saw every new trailer, hope renewed in me that this of the summer movies will actually be pretty good. Still could be lame, but we’ll see. I’m sure it will pull on the strings of my patriotism. Opens July 22, 2011

Summer Movies - Another EarthAnother Earth

On the eve of the discovery of a parallel universe, a horrible tragedy irrevocably alters the lives of two strangers who begin an unlikely love affair.

This is an indie film, so I’m not sure where it will be released but I definitely want to see it. This has an edge of Sci-Fi which delves into a philosophical story. It tells a story of “what if.” what if I did this or that, where would my life be what would it look like. It tells this story by presenting a mirror earth in our sky. Very interesting.  But then again, it could just turn into some soppy tear jerker. Opens July 22, 2011 limited.

Summer Movies - Cowboys and AliensCowboys & Aliens

Cowboys and Indians team up to fight off a group of invading aliens set out to destroy Earth.

I definitely want to see this action flick. As a kid, cowboys were gunslingers and gunslingers is a group I’ve always wanted to be a part of. They laid the law down. Pair up that with the director of Iron Man John Favreau and I know we’ll have something special. It might not win any awards but I know it’ll kick ass. The aliens better be ready for summer movies of this quality. Opens July 29, 2011

Summer Movies - The FutureThe Future

A couple of 30-somethings take time off from their regular routine while waiting to adopt an injured cat, throwing off not only their relationship but their entire universe.

Wow. Just reading the synopsis of this film trips me out. The writer must have been fueled by Redbull and cocaine. Another indie film, this story has a Sci-Fi edge to it with a talking cat and differing realities. I want to see this film for its seemingly original tale. Limited release means it might not be in my area. Opens July 29, 2011 limited.

Summer Movies - Rise of the Planet of the ApesRise of the Planet of the Apes

A single act of both compassion and arrogance leads to a war unlike any other — and to the RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES.

Out of all the summer movies, I will see this movie if only to fill in further details of the universe Planet of the Apes built. It looks to have a lot of action and killer primates. The bothersome part of it is the CGI animals. I can’t help but feel pulled out of the film because something isn’t quite right with them. Oh well. Opens August 5, 2011

Summer Movies - Rise of the Planet of the ApesConan the Barbarian

A quest that begins as a personal vendetta for the fierce Cimmerian warrior soon turns into an epic battle against hulking rivals, horrific monsters, and impossible odds, as Conan realizes he is the only hope of saving the great nations of Hyboria from an encroaching reign of supernatural evil.

Well it isn’t Arnold, but Jason Momoa may be able to do it. If you’ve seen the first season of Game of Thrones than you probably agree with me. Probably gonna be a lame remake, but hey, I bet it’ll be gory and action filled. Opens August 19, 2011
